He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. Psalm 18:34
In the days of David, making metal bows was limited due resources, strength, and training required to handle the heavy weapon. Metal bows were three cubit’s long and proportionally strong so that the soldiers might slay the younger, weaker men who would be using wooden bows (Isaiah 13:18). Just as the M16 service rifle would prove to be more effective in a battle over a 9 mm, the metal bow demonstrated its might over a wooden bow. Only those who regularly worked out could handle such a weapon. According to David he was swift, courageous, and strong. In order to maintain his military skill he must train many hours so that “my arms can bend a bow of bronze.”
Military training exercises might come across as redundant, laborious, and even exhausting at times. However, it is necessary for success in battle. Look to God for strength just as David did when he says, “[God] trains my hands for battle.” God empowered King David to subdue His enemies. We know this since he shouted, “Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle” (Psalm 144:1). Give God the glory for placing you in a valiant American military where you can safely train and employ the best weaponry in the world. You are truly blessed.
