Butch O’Hare, a World War II fighter pilot, was sent on a mission with his entire squadron. When turning around to the mothership for refueling, he realized a squadron of Japanese Zeroes were speeding toward the defenseless American fleet. Immediately, he dove alone into the formation and spent all of his ammunition. He then assaulted the Zeroes by clipping off wings or damaging tails, causing enough exasperation that the Japanese squadron fled in another direction. For his valor, the O’Hare Airport in Chicago was named after this heroic pilot.
Like Butch O’Hare, we Christians are to fight the good fight, yet in the spiritual conflict with Satan’s kingdom of darkness. Believers are not instructed to assault demons or Satan (Jude 9), but to assault error with the truth. But don’t forget we are not alone for the Lord our God is with us. Don’t be afraid to exasperate the enemy by staying faithful to the Word of God even when you feel all alone and isolated. Expend all of the ammunition that you have, whether that be through Bible verses or your love. But, don’t expect any buildings named after you.
Your reward will have eternal value. “Faith is the refusal to panic.” Martin Lloyd-Jones
