The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him. Nahum 1:7
When Oliver Holmes escorted President Lincoln to the front lines to inspect the Union defenses, he pointed out their enemy, but the President stood up to look wearing his high plug hat. They were then targeted with musketry fire from the enemy trenches. Quickly, the young officer safely dragged Lincoln under cover. Later Holmes remembered to his horror that he had muttered: “Get down, you fool!” but was relieved when the down-to-earth President came to him before returning to the capital. “Good-bye, Captain Holmes,” he said. “I’m glad to see you know how to talk to a civilian.”
Goodness begat goodness. Holmes sought to protect Lincoln’s life, and Lincoln chose to ignore Holmes’ denigration. While Holmes prevented Lincoln from danger, Lincoln prevented Holmes from the dangerous fury of Presidential power.
In spite of our sin as believers, God still provides a refuge in times of trouble because He is good. Though He may take vengeance on the wicked, it is done out of His goodness. Equally, it is good for us to fight for Truth, to protect lives in enemy trenches, give refuge to those in times of trouble. After all, He is our refuge and rescues us from danger.
“God made thee good as thou art beautiful.” – Alfred, Lord Tennyson
