Fear Devotional

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. Colossians 3:15

After serving as a WWI German soldier, Hanns Lilje became a chaplain in Hanover. When Hitler came to power, Lilje worked with other German Protestants to oppose National Socialism, yet on August 19, 1944, he was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned. Fear and panic quickly began to creep over him, like an evil beast creeping out of its den. He began to see himself and his position very clearly, as recorded in The Valley of the Shadow. The next morning Lilje heard someone whistling the Christian choral: “Oh for a thousand tongues to sing. . . .” Immediately, he realized the peace of God in the darkest of situations, but he would have to let that peace of Christ rule in his heart.

Dwelling on Christ invariably relates to the peace only He can bring. Peace does not depend on external circumstances, instead it comes directly from the Lord as it is placed in our hearts. Should you need the peace of God in your heart, dwell upon Him and sing a song a praise to God “for a thousand tongues to sing.”

“A great many people are trying to make peace, but that has already been done. God has not left it for us to do; all we have to do is to enter into it.” – D.L. Moody
