Father, I confess that I am having an emotional affair. I know that cleaving to another in this way is a gross violation of my marriage vows (Matthew 19:5-6). This person is fulfilling an emotional need I have; one my spouse is unaware of or unwilling to meet. I know that this does not justify my behavior.
I realize I’m opening the door for full-blown sexual infidelity. Your Word says that a prudent person foresees the danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it (Proverbs 27:12). I do not want to keep being foolish, nor do I want to suffer the loss of my marriage. I need to terminate this harmful relationship now. Help me to immediately stop the secret e-mails, the phone calls, the inappropriate compliments, or any other actions that keep this immoral fire burning.
Forgive me for being ignorant of Satan’s schemes and devices and falling into his trap (2 Corinthians 2:11). Teach me and my spouse how to effectively communicate our needs to each other and take steps to fulfill them within the bounds of our marriage.
As David prayed after his downfall with Bathsheba, have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all of my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin…wash me and I will be whiter than snow (Psalm 51:1-7). In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
